Wondering just how someone becomes a dance teacher? Many people are unaware that years of taking dance lessons are only one small part of the process. In order to become a dance teacher, you need to have a degree in the art, and depending on where you’d like to teach, you may need a degree or certificate in education. Read on to learn more about how to become a dance teacher.

Start with Dance Training

In order to become a dance teacher, you need to spend plenty of time learning how to dance. Many students start when they’re young and either specialize in one discipline (like ballet) or go to a dance school that teaches them a variety of styles. After these decades of practicing the art, those who want to become dance teachers and make a difference in the lives of their students have to take initiative to move on to the next step in the process: getting a college degree.

Get a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance

A degree in Dance, often a Bachelor of Arts degree like the one offered by Dean College, is important for those who want to teach the art. Why? Because it provides you with a thorough background in dance. The degree not only includes courses in different forms of dance, but it also teaches the history behind each. Movement analysis, as well as training in kinesiology and anatomy, will make you a stronger dance. In addition, Dance majors at Dean College choose one of four different dance concentrations, including dance pedagogy and studio management. With dance pedagogy, you’ll supplement your conservatory-level dance training with courses in education and child development. In the studio management track, you’ll also take education courses as well as business courses to help prepare you to run a dance studio.

Obtain a Teaching Degree (if Necessary)

Further qualifications depend on where you’d like to teach dance. Here’s a quick breakdown of your options:

  • Professional Dance School or Company – Professional dance companies often run dance schools of their own that their employees (those lucky enough to be professional dancers) need to attend on a regular basis on top of their rehearsals and performances. These dance schools hire dancers who have professional experience of their own as dance teachers.
  • Pre-Professional Dance School – A pre-professional dance school, often the next step for many dancers who have the skill to go on and become professionals, are staffed by former professional dancers with plenty of on-stage experience. They use this knowledge to teach their skills to the next round of professionals.
  • Dance Studio or School – In order to own or work at a dance studio or school, you need to have a degree in dance, as well as plenty of experience on the dance floor, either professionally or non-professionally. Some have a special certificate in dance education, if not a full teaching degree on top of their dance degree.
  • Elementary, Middle, or High School – Those who want to teach dance at a school, like an elementary school, middle school, junior high, or high school, may need to have an education degree and all of the required teaching certifications, depending on the school and state requirements. These dance teachers start out with a B.A. in dance before going on to get their teaching credentials.
  • Community Centers – Depending on the community center, teachers either need to have plenty of experience and a bachelor’s degree in Dance, or a special dance teaching certificate on top of all of that. It can vary, based on the level and the particular type of dance they you plan on teaching as well.

Never Stop Learning

In addition to all of the above, it’s essential that dance teachers stay actively involved in continuous learning. Taking additional dance classes, even though you’re also teaching students as well, can help you stay on top of the art form and all it has to offer.
