Business Management Major Grows Real-World Skills with Eversource
Sean Doherty ’24, a double major in Business Management and Marketing, is using both the knowledge he’s learned in the classroom and the skills he’s learned on the soccer field to succeed in his summer internship with Eversource Energy.
As an intern in the Cost Estimating Department at Eversource, Sean works closely with the estimating team to create, review and reconcile estimates.
“My day-to-day consists of meetings with the estimating team, reconciliation team and senior estimators,” he explained. “Outside of meetings, I'm tasked with independent projects such as organizing financial data, pulling actuals from completed estimates and compiling data that assists the team in predicting estimates for new/future projects.”
He credits both his coursework and his role as a midfielder on the men’s soccer team for helping him build the knowledge and skills needed for this internship.
“My courses have helped me gain knowledge in relevant topics such as accounting, finance and data analysis and created a solid foundation for performing my role as a cost estimator,” Sean said. “Earning Excel badges through Dean has given me ample experience in using this platform, which has assisted me in completing my day-to-day tasks on the job. My time on the Dean men's soccer team has also prepared me for this role by teaching me how to manage my time, work alongside others and efficiently communicate.”
As Sean enters his senior year at Dean, he feels ready to step into the real world as a result of his experiences at Eversource.
“My internship is preparing me for my future career through providing great hands-on experience at a large and established company,” he said. “Having the opportunity to learn and work alongside an amazing team at Eversource Energy throughout this summer has given me an inside look at working full-time and the expectations which come along with such a role. The valuable knowledge I've gained and skills I've developed at Eversource have me looking forward to further evolving and preparing for my future career.”
