Are you yearning for travel during your college education? Then it may not surprise you that college students these days are looking to supplement their higher-ed journeys with a study-away experience. Research has shown that there are many benefits to this, including:

  • deepened academic learning from participation in diverse academic experiences with students from around the world
  • increased employability due to companies valuing international experience as it demonstrates adaptability, cultural competence and the ability to thrive in diverse environments
  • enhanced language proficiency when immersed in an environment where English is not the primary language
  • greater intercultural understanding and a broader global context from exposure to different cultures

At Dean College, we have curated a study-away program that is not one size fits all but rather offers our students unique choices that will allow them to achieve their study-away ambitions. Whether you only want to take a short weeklong trip, are considering a full semester, or yearn to spend an entire academic calendar year studying away, Dean has the perfect fit for you! There are even winter and summer break experiences ranging from two to six weeks.

“Studying away offers a transformative opportunity to immerse yourself in new environments, cultures and ideas, broadening not only your education but also your outlook on the world,” said Melissa Read, Dean’s Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs and Director of Study Away Programs. “I love working with our Dean students to craft the perfect experience for them that will ultimately help them grow and succeed in their lives after college."

Here are a few of the ways you can study away while you’re a student at Dean:

  • Attend a study abroad program at one of the more than 150 colleges and universities in over 50 countries through the International Student Exchange Program, including the U.K., Europe, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Africa, and many more.
  • Take an academic course at Dean that includes a one-to-two-week guided group tour abroad, like the course Spain: Land of Many Cultures in Spring 2025.
  • Participate in a study away option in the U.S., including at the Washington Center in Washington, DC, the Disney College Program in Orlando, FL, and the National Outdoor Leadership School.
  • Get moving at DanceAbroad Argentina, a January intensive in Buenos Aries that blends Spanish language immersion with concentrated studies in dance,.
  • Study at one of the most internationally diverse universities in the UK, Regent’s University London, where you can live on-campus and enjoy all that this historic city has to offer.
  • Dreaming of Italy? Then Assumption University in Rome will immerse you in the history, art, language and culture of one of the world’s most celebrated cities.
  • Bard College Berlin offers two academic options for Dean students: Liberal Arts and Arts & Society. The student body is highly international and small seminars are taught in English.
  • Semester at Sea is a truly unique study abroad experience, where the world is quite literally your classroom as you live and study on a ship while traveling to 10 to 12 countries.
  • The First Year Abroad Program is for qualified high school graduates who want to start their college journey internationally and can opt to spend a semester to a full first year studying abroad. Locations include Barcelona, Copenhagen, Dublin, Kyoto, Paris, Sydney and many more.

Joseph Medeiros, a Sport Management major at Dean, spent the spring semester of his junior year at Regent’s University London. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “Studying abroad really opened my mind to just how big the world really is, and I met so many interesting people from different countries and backgrounds.  I 100 percent recommend studying abroad if you have the opportunity. It not only forces you out of your comfort zone but also increases your confidence and independence. Not to mention all the memories and friends you make along the way. I loved my time abroad.”

If you are a confident, ambitious student seeking to become a true global citizen, you are encouraged to consider one of Dean’s exciting study away opportunities.
