Dean College professor with students discussing ways to become a sports marketer.

For many people, working in sports is more of a calling than it is a career choice. If you count yourself among them due to your love of the game, then becoming a sports marketer is probably a dream job. How can high school students find themselves on this career path? It all starts with a degree and some sports knowledge and continues with hands-on practice in the field itself.

Ready to learn more about a career in sports marketing? Here’s what you need to know to kick-start your career.

Earn a College Degree

Marketing professionals usually have a bachelor’s degree in the subject. They enroll in a four-year program in a major like marketing, business management, sport management, or sports marketing. Others may contain the right mix of subject matter to get students ready to succeed in that world, but those are the most common ones.

Learn as Much as Possible

When it comes to working in sports marketing, several college courses will teach you what you need to know. They include courses in communication, marketing, business, management, finance, and more. You’ll also need to sharpen your other skills, including time management, research, tech literacy, and organization, all of which should accompany your college degree.

Get an Internship

It’s practically impossible to get into any field these days, much less marketing, without an internship. Many college marketing and management degree programs now require an internship for college credit to graduate. Beyond that, an internship will give you firsthand experience in the field and help you get to know others who work in sports marketing.

Network with Others in the Field

Networking is an important part of every potential career, and you often need to know the right people to secure a sought-after position. The more people you know in sports marketing, the more likely your chances are of getting your dream job. So, attend every networking event that you can.

Attend Graduate School

In most cases you won’t need to have a graduate degree in sports marketing to get an entry-level job in the industry. However, if you want to move up in the sports marketing world and advance your career, you may need a master’s degree. Consider earning a Master of Business Administration, a master’s in marketing or sports marketing, or any other certification that may pertain to the industry.
