The bronze bulldog statue on the Dean College Campus

This week officially kicks off our New Student Orientation (NSO) program! Whether you’re participating in a virtual orientation or an in-person one, we’ve got some tips to help you make the most of your experience and kickstart your time at Dean.

  • Step outside your comfort zone: It’s normal to be nervous about coming to NSO and starting college, but everyone here is in the same position. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation or introduce yourself to someone new – you might just meet a lifelong friend.
  • Ask questions: NSO is designed to get you ready for Dean – so now’s the perfect time to ask all the questions on your mind. Ask our faculty and staff anything about classes or the academic experience, ask your orientation leaders what they’re involved in on campus to get the inside scoop on what it’s like to be a student here and ask your fellow Bulldogs why they chose to come to Dean. No question is too small or too silly – chances are, if you’re wondering about it, someone else is too.
  • Sign up for your one-on-one sessions: Take advantage of the opportunity NSO offers to schedule meetings with your Success and Career advisor and the Center for Student Financial Planning and Services. These sessions will give you some personalized guidance on starting your career at Dean and navigating financial aid – and are the perfect time to ask some of those questions you might have. Instructions on how to sign up for these appointments will be sent out via email the week prior to the session you signed up for.
  • Take notes: From campus tours to sessions that cover everything you need to know about living on campus or commuting, there’s a lot of information you’ll learn during NSO. Make sure you have a pen and notebook ready to write everything down for future reference. It never hurts to be overprepared.
  • Watch the virtual sessions: Some of our information sessions have been pre-recorded to watch anytime, whether you are attending an in-person or virtual orientation. Don’t forget to watch the virtual sessions to learn about Health and Counseling Services, Rules and Expectations Within Our Community, and Involvement at Dean.

Whether we’re seeing you on campus or on the screen, we’re so excited to welcome you to the Dean community. Learn more about NSO at dean.edu/NSO
